Glenn Spicker

Picture
An American entrepreneur and restaurant owner, Glenn Spicker grew up in Connecticut and studied in the US, England, and Germany. He arrived in central Europe in 1991 shortly after the fall of the Iron Curtain. And given his adventurous spirit and willingness to try anything, it is no wonder Glenn was attracted to the raw atmosphere of post-communist Europe, specifically Prague. In 1993 Glenn settled in Prague and since then has headed up some of the most recognizable institutions and restaurants in Prague; the ever-present U Maleho Glena, the always-tasty Bohemia Bagel, the intriguing Museum of Communism, a shop of unique Czech crafts Traditional, and the newest addition the bar-restaurant-experience Propaganda. Over the years, Glenn's work has shaped and continues to shape the bohemian atmosphere for which Prague is so well known.

An avid biker and lover of the outdoors, Glenn purchased Northernmost in 2004. Nestled in Europe's largest National Park, Czech-Saxon Switzerland, he found the place ideal for both mountain and road biking. In the summer Glenn loves to spend weekends at Northernmost; whether its mountain biking in the woods seeing how many times he can cross the Czech-German border, hanging by the campfire, or playing his drums as loud as he wants, Glenn enjoys life in the countryside. But its not just the outdoors that attracted Glenn to the place. Northernmost is an old German farm that survived two world wars and a stint as Communist farm-collective. Thus, its safe to say an extraordinary man was paired with an extraordinary place. And of course, Glenn's grand ideas are not contained to Prague. This fall Glenn plans to submit a grant to the European Union that could potentially transform Northernmost into both a textile and communist farm museum.  We are all excited to see what Glenn will write in the next chapter of Northernmost's history.

Evan Nesterak

Picture
Evan Nesterak is the resident caretaker of Northernmost. His responsibilities include a little bit of everything: from clearing out century-old of stuff from the barns to mowing the lawn and doing the laundry; from helping turn the old sawmill into a lounge to making sure the mountain bikes are ready to go. But what brought him to Northernmost in the first place?

After graduating from Swarthmore College in 2009, with a degree in Psychology, Evan went in search of an education outside of the classroom and beyond the lecture hall. In the fall of 2009,  he worked as a member of the Maine Conservation Corps, where he not only lived and worked in Maine's gorgeous states parks for three months, but also grew a beard and bought a few plaid shirts. From Maine, Evan drove back home to Colorado and found a job working night security for the National Western Stock Show in Denver. Twenty-one straight days 6pm to 6am, which he found strangely enjoyable. (And no cows escaped on his watch.) After his stint as a security guard, Evan spent two weeks at an organic farm in Dexter, Oregon where he earned his Permaculture Certification.

That brings us to March of 2010, when Evan Nesterak arrived in the Czech Republic and continued his quest for an education outside the classroom. And it is safe to say that in Northernmost he found quite the teacher. Living alone in an old house that requires tons of work in a rural area where the people don't speak his language is quite the challenge. But challenges have their rewards. He has learned and continues to learn quite a bit about the upkeep of a huge farmhouse. He has made some great friends and his Czech is improving. Every Saturday he plays for the local soccer team SK Plaston Sluknov and when he's not playing soccer he rides his bike throughout northern Czech and Germany. What's next for Evan is the perennial question, but right now he is living in the moment at Northernmost.
